FAQs

A dog wandered into my yard, what should I do?

If possible, check with your neighbors, they might know where the dog lives. Call the Animal Control Office, they may know of an owner driving around looking for the dog, can check lost dog reports, and if the dog has tags they may be able to look up the owner's information and contact them. If no owner can be located, the Animal Control Officer can pick up the dog.

I just got a dog, how do I register him/her?

Your dog needs to get an ID tag. ID Tags are issued at the Animal Control Program office in the tribal community building. Bring along the dog’s current rabies certificate. The cost is $5.00 per tag.

I lost my dog.  What do I do now?

Drive or walk around the neighborhood calling your dog. Check with neighbors, they may have seen which way he went. Call Animal Control at (518) 358-2272, they may have your dog or have had sightings. They will ask for information to complete a lost dog report. The Animal Control Officer may also be able to drive around and help in the search if available.  Report the lost dog to CKON with the description of the dog and area where the dog lives.  Report your dog lost immediately upon noticing him/her missing.  Ensure your pet has ID tags on, just in case someone finds him/her.  Do not wait too long to report it.  The longer your dog is missing, the less likely he will be found.

How do I claim my dog if it is picked up by Animal Control?

If the Animal Control Officer picks up a dog and cannot locate the owner, the dog is taken to our holding facility. To find out if we have your dog and what the charges will be, you need to call the Animal Control Program Office at (518) 358-2272 between 8:00 am and 4:00 pm.  You can also view www.srmt-nsn.gov and click on the animal control lost & found link to see if your pet is listed.
To claim your dog you will need a current rabies vaccination certificate. If your dog does not have one, the dog will not be released until vaccinated.  The Animal Control Officer will get the dog vaccinated before you can take the dog home.  There will be a charge for the Rabies vaccination, ID tag fee, and also a daily charge that includes housing and feeding of the dog(s).

My neighbor’s dog barks all the time, what can be done?

If you are comfortable talking with your neighbor, let them know the barking is disturbing you.  They might not be aware of the barking if it happens when they aren’t home.  If you don’t want to approach your neighbor call Animal Control at (518) 358-2272 with the address of the “barker” and we will send a letter to the owner making them aware of the barking. We will not use your name/address in the letter.  Follow up with Animal Control Office and let us know if the letter helped or not.
