SUMMARY:  To enhance the image of the St. Regis Mohawk Tribe in a professional manner by promoting information flow, promoting effective relations with the public and media, providing interviews and public comments, working closely with the Tribal Council and senior staff, educating the community and surrounding areas to the Tribe's organization, and ensuring consistent and unified position statements.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Ensures that regular contact and coordination is established and maintained with all communication and media outlets.
  • Researches and provides information as needed on community issues to the tribal government, state and federal elected leaders, tribal divisions and interested parties.
  • Coordinates and facilitates ongoing public relations and community-building projects.
  • Initiates and coordinates publicity for all council members, community committees and tribal programs that directly relate to their work.
  • Writes and/or edits press releases, articles, public notices, newsletter of tribal events, community mailers, and program workshops.
  • Coordinates and writes content and establishes timelines of monthly newsletter.
  • Facilitates contact among Council, programs and press to ensure press questions and request for information are answered in a timely manner.
  • Develops content and oversees maintenance of tribal website to include division information, upcoming events, releases, statements, and assorted public information.
  • Responsible for the Public Relations office in a manner that serves to maximize departmental resources by maintaining a daily file of relevant media clippings from newspapers, magazines, etc. 
  • Provides copies of pertinent information to all tribal divisions and members of the tribal government.
  • Sets up all press conferences and arranges meetings between the Councils and Governmental representatives.
  • Working knowledge of the organization’s policies, goals and history, develops projects (Tribal Information Brochure and Tribal Program Brochure) to maintain staff and community relations.
  • Attends conferences and workshops to gather and relay information to Council.
  • Arranges and schedules tours of all facilities and programs.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Directly supervises two employees in the Public Information department.
  • Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws.
  • Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
Bachelor’s degree (B. A.) or equivalent from four-year college or technical school; or two years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.
  • Ability to write reports, news items, press releases, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
  • Must be able to work effectively under tight timelines and deadlines.

NATIVE PREFERENCE POLICY

The St. Regis Mohawk Tribe gives preference to Native Americans who meet the requirements of the posted position.  To the extent possible, and consistent with job requirements, employees will be recruited from among the members of the Tribe.

DRUG TESTING POLICY

The successful applicant for employment must submit to a drug test for illegal substances prior to employment being confirmed.  The testing is performed at the laboratory at the Alice Hyde Hospital in Malone, NY.   Test results are normally received in three to five days from the date of the test.  In the case of a positive result, the candidate is not eligible for employment with the St. Regis Mohawk Tribe.  Employment may not begin until this process has been completed.
