ST. REGIS MOHAWK TRIBAL CHILD CARE PROGRAM

The SRMT Child Care Program offers quality child care services to the Akwesasne community. The program has three different components as follows:

The Child Care Center has the capacity to care for 8 Infants, ages 6 months up to 18 months, and 10 toddlers, ages 18 months up to 3 years old. The center is open from 7:30 am until 5 pm Monday through Friday. The goal of our program is to offer our children a safe, nurturing environment that enhances each child's level of development. Our qualified teaching staff provide our children opportunities to explore their world, hands on, through a variety of age appropriate activities within a structured setting.

The Home-based portion of our program allows children the same opportunities as the Center in a less structured environment. This portion of our program is able to care for children from birth up to 13 years of age for various hours. Qualified child care providers care for children in either their home or the childss home. This arrangement allows more flexibility in the hours care may be provided and lower staff-child ratios.

A Child Care Subsidy is available for qualifying families. Parents who are working or involved in a training program and whose income is less than 200% of the NY State income standard may be eligible for assistance with their Child Care fees. The amount of subsidy available for each family is determined on a sliding fee scale, which takes into consideration household income and family size.

Soon the child care program will be undergoing some major changes. We are in the process of developing an Intergenerational Center, which will merge the current seniors and child care programs. At the same time we will be adding up to 34 child care slots and expanding our hours of operation to accommodate families who work non-traditional hours. We are also in the process of adding more quality to the Home-based portion of our program. Policies and procedures are being developed that will ensure all health and safety precautions are being met and that the program is operating in the best interest of the children and families it provides services for.
