AIR QUALITY

The air program started in 1990 at Akwesasne. The program has focused on air toxins from industrial plants (Alcoa Aluminum and GM) and the impact that they have had on the reservation. The air toxins we are targeting are PAHs, Fluorides, Styrene and metals. Other air quality issues include emissions from fuel oil storage tanks, open garbage burning on the reservation, acid rain deposition, sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, particulate material, radon, and indoor air quality.
