WATER QUALITY

The program is primarily responsible for the protection of all Akwesasne waters by developing and implementing water quality standards and criteria for all rivers that flow through Akwesasne. These criteria will be federally recognized and enforceable by the St. Regis Mohawk Tribe once developed and approved. The program is responsible for the monitoring and oversight of industrial discharge and other discharges to the rivers and for sampling wildlife, sediment, and water for fluoride, mirex, mercury, PAHs and PCBs.

The program will utilize the Non-Point and Source Water Assessments to develop and implement management plans to protect water quality. The program also samples and reviews data from 90 EPA drinking water standard tests that are taken for the public drinking water supply. All monitoring activities have a Quality Assurance Project Plan and final reports that will be available to the community.
