GEOGRAPHIC INFORMATION SYSTEMS (GIS) The GIS program was initiated to assist the many Division projects in monitoring, assessing, and mapping pollution problems. The U.S. Department of the Interior, Bureau of Indian Affairs developed base map layers that have been edited and updated and several hundred new themes of data have been added to the GIS library since 1991. There have been an increasing number of requests for our GIS data from agencies, industry, and contractors. Local industries, ALCOA and General Motors, also distribute data containing monitoring information for remediation efforts. The GIS program provides maps for other Tribal programs and local agencies such as area schools, police, fire, ambulance and cultural projects. Some of the types of data used in the Tribe's GIS include roads, rivers, buildings, waterline, hydrants, elevations, marshes, and soils. The GIS program coordinator also maintains the Environment Division internet site on the world wide web. Environment Division program descriptions, project information, directions, educational materials, contact information and more are available at www.srmtenv.org. |
