PRESS RELEASE For immediate release: For information contact:
Haudenosaunee GIS Symposium to be Held in AkwesasneAkwesasne, NY, Onerahtokha/April 3, 2006 The St. Regis Mohawk Tribe Environment Division under the coordination of the Onhwentsà:ke Information Systems Lab is pleased to announce and invite you to participate in the 2006 Haudenosaunee GIS Symposium, “Rolling out the Great White Mat”. It will be held in Akwesasne from
One of the highlights of the symposium will include a Geocaching adventure. Originally referred to as a GPS Stash Hunt, Geocaching in its original form is much like a high-tech version of the old children's game of "Huckle-Buckle-Beanstalk" where someone would hide an object and others would then try to find it. If you enjoy high-tech toys, getting outdoors and love a challenge, then Geocaching could be just the game you're looking for. Since the hunt will be held outdoors (rain or shine) and our weather can be tricky...plan on bringing waterproof hiking boots. Transportation, GPS equipment and rain gear will be provided. We will be caching through nature trails that meander through old growth forests, meadows, wetlands and river habitats. Cameras and binoculars recommended. The Treasure Hunt promises to be the most fun GISers have ever had using GPS equipment and 12 billion dollars in military hardware! The full symposium schedule along with the registration information can be viewed at the Environment Division website at www.srmtenv.org. You may also contact the Environment Division at 358-5937. -30-
