MOHAWK BINGO PALACE TO HOST
EASTERN GOLDEN GLOVES CHAMPIONSHIP ON MARCH 25TH
Proceeds to benefit St. Regis Mohawk Tribe's
Health Services
AKWESASNE -- The Mohawk Bingo Palace announced that after a three-year absence the sport of boxing is once again coming back to Akwesasne. At a press conference held yesterday morning, the Bingo Palace stated that for the first time it would host semifinal matches for the Eastern Golden Gloves Championship on Saturday, March 25th.
Qualifying matches were held earlier this year in Rensealler Falls and in Troy, New York. The final qualifying match will be held on March 18th in Altona, New York with all the winners advancing to the March 25th semifinal event at the Mohawk Bingo Palace.
The boxing event will feature approximately 10 to 20 bouts that will showcase some of the best amateur talent, including a few female bouts and CAN-AM matches. The winner of the tournament will move on to the New York State Championship that will be held at the Turning Stone Casino in Verona, New York next month.
Golden Gloves is an annual competition for amateur boxing in the United States. It's sponsored and controlled by the Golden Gloves Association of America, with each state holding Golden Gloves competitions. The state winners advance and will compete in the 2006 Golden Gloves National Tournament of Champions scheduled for April 22-30 in Omaha, Nebraska.
The bouts get underway at 7pm on March 25th and tickets should be purchased early as previous Golden Gloves events have sold out. The price for general admission is $20 U.S. or $25 Canadian. Minors will be permitted to attend the event, with children under the age of 12 requiring adult supervision.
The Mohawk Bingo Palace will be a smoke-free facility on the day of the event from 5pm until all the boxing matches are completed.
1,400 tickets will be sold for the event and all proceeds will benefit the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe's Health Services.
