COMPLIANCE DEPARTMENT IMPLEMENTS VENDOR PERMIT REQUIREMENT

AKWESASNE — The Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe’s Compliance Department has implemented a registration requirement for all vendors that conduct business in the Akwesasne territory. A tribal vendor permit must be carried at all times by individuals that provide product, services, or engage in door-to-door sales.

The Compliance Department is responsible for protecting consumer interests and to ensure that quality products are sold in Akwesasne. Compliance promotes a friendly and respectful relationship between government, businesses and the general public. This requires all vendors to adhere to tribal laws and to engage in good business practices.

Akwesasne residents have the right to view the vendor’s permit at any time. Should a vendor fail to provide a permit, individuals can demand that they leave the premises. Residents can also notify the local authorities to have the vendor removed.

Vendors can also be reported to authorities if they:

·   Engage in unethical business practices

·   Sold defective products

·   Trespassed on private property

·   Engage in conduct not authorized by the permit

·   Conduct door-to-door sales beyond daylight hours

All reports will be investigated by a Compliance Officer and a finding will be issued. A determination may be made to suspend or revoke the vendor permit.
