VOTERS RE-ELECT CHIEF BARBARA LAZORE AND TRIBAL CLERK PATRICIA THOMAS
Stacey Adams Elected Tribal Sub-Chief

AKWESASNE , NY — The Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe held its annual tribal elections this past weekend, with 861 ballots being cast for the positions of Tribal Chief, Tribal Sub-Chief, and Tribal Clerk. Voting took place in the lobby of the Tribe’s Community Building from 9am- 5pm on Saturday, June 3, 2006 .

This year’s unofficial election results were made available by the Tribal Election Board nearly two hours after the polls closed. The unofficial results showed Barbara A. Lazore being re-elected to a three-year term as Tribal Chief, while Patricia Thomas will serve another term as the Tribal Clerk. Incoming Tribal Council member Stacey Adams will also serve a three-year term after being elected as Tribal Sub-Chief.

“Congratulations to Tribal Chief Barbara Lazore and Tribal Clerk Patricia Thomas on winning re-election and to Stacey Adams on her successful bid as Sub-Chief,” said Tribal Chief Lorraine M. White. She added, “The Tribal Council looks forward to working with each of them for the betterment of the Akwesasne community.”

Incumbent Barbara A. Lazore won re-election as Tribal Chief with a total of 441 votes. Four-hundred and two ballots were cast in support of Lazore during the day of the tribal election, while 39 tribal members submitted absentee ballots.

Sub-Chief Emily Lauzon ran for Tribal Chief and garnered 200 votes (160 ballots, 40 absentee), while Phillip Tarbell received 125 votes (108 ballots, 17 absentee), and Angus McDonald received 77 (69 ballots, 8 absentee). There were 11 spoiled ballots and 7 write-in votes.

Stacey Adams was successful in her bid for Tribal Sub-Chief and received a total 279 votes. Adams received 255 ballots during Election Day, while 24 absentee ballots were submitted in her favor.

Candidates Agatha Thompson received 223 total votes (194 ballots, 29 absentee), Edith McDonald received 186 votes (142 ballots, 44 absentee), and Mark Martin received 144 votes (137 ballots, 7 absentee). There were 22 spoiled ballots and 7 write-in votes.

Patricia Thomas won re-election as the Tribal Clerk with a total of 552 votes. Thomas received 428 votes on Election Day and 84 absentee ballots.

Tribal Clerk Candidates Tracey Cook-Sunday received 143 total votes (130 ballots, 13 absentee), and Harry McDonald received 137 votes (128 ballots, 9 absentee). There were 16 spoiled ballots and 6 write-in votes.

Tribal Chief James W. Ransom noted that, “Being elected to office is an important civic responsibility and each candidate is to be commended for their willingness to serve.” He continued, “The Tribal Council extends its thanks to all the tribal members that voted in this year’s election and to the candidates who ran for office.”

The Tribal Council also expresses its appreciation to Emily Lauzon for her service to the Akwesasne community. Lauzon was elected in 2003 and served three-years as Tribal Sub-Chief.
