The Saint Regis Mohawk Tribal Council and the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne have announced that the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) will be holding a public briefing on the revised traffic plans for the new Massena Port of Entry. The meeting will be held on June 19th at
6pm
at the Tribe’s
Community
Building
for all interested Akwesasne residents.
“We are pleased with the cooperation Akwesasne leadership has received from the Project Design Team and for their willingness to share the new traffic plans with our community,” said St. Regis Mohawk Tribal Chief James W. Ransom. Chief Ransom added, “The revised plan addresses the concerns and needs of the Akwesasne community.”
At a May 2nd project update with Akwesasne leaders, the engineering firm Edwards & Kelcey, along with GSA, presented new plans for the flow of traffic at the new Massena Port of Entry. The revised plan place the entry point for the new border station near the traffic circle’s existing entrance.
Earlier plans called for the elimination of the existing traffic circle and placing the entrance for the border crossing nearly one-half mile away from the community. Akwesasne leaders opposed the initial traffic plans stating that it increased the distance for local residents and response time for emergency services.
Mohawk Council of Akwesasne Chief Larry King noted that, “There were initial concerns with the original plan that was proposed in December. Some community members pass through the border station several times each day, so I am glad that the project is anticipated to have minimal impact on local residents and emergency personnel.”
The Project Design Team will be returning to Akwesasne on June 19th to hold a public briefing on the revised traffic plans. The meeting will be held at
6pm
in the lobby of the Tribe’s
Community
Building
. All interested community members are welcomed to attend.
