AKWESASNE In March 2006, the late-Margaret Terrance willed the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe three tracts of land that total nearly 90-acres in Hogansburg and Frogtown along with terms for their use. One tract is located behind the Tribe’s new

on State Route 37 that will be used for a Youth Sports Complex. Another tract that includes the Terrance home is intended for a

Preliminary plans for each have just started to be discussed, but include the formation of two committees comprised of community members to oversee the development of both facilities. Any community member interested in joining either committee is encouraged to submit their names for consideration.
“We need to get the community involved to determine what the buildings need to provide,” said Tribal Chief Barbara A. Lazore. She added, “Margaret Terrance has made an important contribution to our community, in life as well as in her passing, and we want to show our appreciation by creating facilities that community members can use to their full potential.”
Initial discussions have taken place for the Youth Sports Complex and some anticipated services it will provide, as well as what the facility would look like. Recommendations include a building large enough to house the Boys & Girls Club, performing arts, classrooms, indoor track, swimming pool, volleyball and basketball courts, athletic field, and other uses to be identified.
“I am excited that these facilities will now allow organizations like the Boys & Girls Club to grow and provide services to youth and others,” noted Tribal Chief Lorraine M. White.
The inclusion of community members on each committee will help to identify the ideal use for both facilities. It is envisioned that a community assessment that includes a survey component will also be conducted in the coming months.
Community members interested in joining the Youth Sports Complex Committee or the Wellness Center Committee are encouraged to contact Diane McDonald, Tribal Council’s Executive Assistant, at (518) 358-2272 and submit their names.
The next meeting for both committees will be held on July 7th at

in the Tribal Council’s Boardroom at the Tribe’s

“We’re still in the early stages of determining how each of the tracts will be utilized,” said Tribal Sub-Chief Ron LaFrance. He concluded, “The community’s involvement will help meet the two-year deadline to begin development of the Youth Sports Complex.”
