COMMUNITY ANNOUNCEMENTS FROM THE DEPARTMENT OF PLANNING AND INFRASTRUCTURE

AKWESASNE, N.Y. — The St. Regis Mohawk Tribe’s Planning and Infrastructure Department asks community members to clearly mark their water line shut off valves. They would also like to remind Akwesasne residents that fire hydrates are to be used by the fire department only.

The Tribe’s Water Department will soon be undertaking a mapping project of each residential shut off valve. They are requesting homeowners on the public drinking water supply to mark the valves. This will help the staff identify the values at are not visible. The information collected will be entered into the Geographic Information System database for future reference. Collection of the information only takes a couple minutes. The department asks if you own a dog that it is tied up to ensures the safety of the staff. The community’s corporation in this matter will help to ensure that all the information is collected.

Planning and Infrastructure Department has reserved the use of fire hydrants in Akwesasne for the Fire Department only. Unauthorized use of these fire hydrants will be considered Trespassing and a Theft of Services which will be reported to the St. Regis Mohawk Tribal Police. Contractors and subcontractors may request permission for use of a fire hydrant from the St. Regis Mohawk Tribe Planning and Infrastructure Department.

If you have any questions please contact Shawn Martin, Water Department Manager at 358 – 2272 ext. 268.
