SWAMP TO REJOIN THE TRIBAL POLICE COMMISSION
Swearing-In Ceremony to be Held on Monday, August 8th

AKWESASNE , N.Y. — The St. Regis Mohawk Tribal Police Commission will soon have one more member to its board of commissioners. Rita Swamp will be sworn-in as a police commissioner on Monday, August 8, with Chief James Ransom administering the oath of office.

Rita Swamp will join James McDonald, Terry Cree, Diane Boots Connors and Edith McDonald as tribal police commissioners. Swamp previously served as a police commissioner before her two-years as a Tribal Sub-Chief, which ended in June 2005.  Swamp also spent many years working on behalf of the community as a social worker.

James McDonald expressed his enthusiasm in having Swamp return as a police commissioner. He noted that, “Rita brings with her experience as a member of the Tribal Council and as a previous police commissioner.” McDonald added, “We are honored to have her back, she is a tremendous asset.”

“One of my first priorities as a commissioner will be to review all the policies and procedures and make any necessary improvements,” said Swamp.

Swamp indicated that she will also be assisting the commission in locating funding for the tribal police department. The majority of their funding comes from the Tribe, but additional funds are needed for patrolling the nearly 12 miles of international border that runs through Akwesasne.

The swearing-in ceremony will be conducted at 9am on Monday, August 8, 2005 in the lobby of the Tribe’s Community Building . It is open to the public and everyone is welcomed to attend.

The next meeting for the Tribal Police Commission is planned for August 10th.

The St. Regis Mohawk Tribal Council is the duly elected and federally recognized government of the Mohawk people.
