MOHAWK BINGO PALACE TO HOST SENIORAMA 2005
August 18th Event will Include Town Hall Meeting with Elected Officials

AKWESASNE , N.Y. — Thousands of senior citizens from eight Northern New York counties are expected to converge at the Mohawk Bingo Palace next Thursday. The St. Regis Mohawk Tribe’s Class II gaming operation is hosting the annual Seniorama event for the fourth consecutive year, which is the largest Seniorama event in the State.

“Seniors are an active group for many communities throughout the North Country , “said Tribal Chief Barbara A. Lazore. “The Tribe is glad to combine resources with the Statewide Senior Action Council as we work towards mutual goals on behalf of seniors.”

The day-long event will also showcase more than 70 organizations, products, programs and opportunities to promote independence and well-being for seniors. The event also provides an opportunity for elected officials to hear the concerns and opinions of seniors on current issues and public policy.

Seniorama 2005 will include the event’s first town hall meeting for elected officials to discuss health issues, social security, medical services, State prescription drug policy and other issues. Elected officials scheduled to speak include the St. Regis Mohawk Tribal Council, Assemblyman G. Christopher Ortloff (R-Plattsburgh), Assemblyman Darrel J. Aubertine (D-Cape Vincent), Assemblywoman Dierdre K. Scozzafava (R-Governor), Assemblywoman Teresa R. Sayward ((R-Willsboro), and Chairman of the St. Lawrence County Legislature Thomas A. Nichols (R-Ogdensburg).

Seniors from Lewis, Jefferson, St. Lawrence, Franklin, Clinton, Essex, Warrren and Hamilton counties will take part in the event sponsored by the North Country Chapter of the New York Statewide Action Council, St. Regis Mohawk Tribe, Mohawk Bingo Palace and the Akwesasne Mohawk Casino.

According to event organizers, last year’s event attracted more than 2,000 seniors and featured over 50 vendors that included hospitals, independent living agencies, health organizations and other senior services from around the region. They provided free blood pressure checks and other health screenings.

“Everyone involved with Seniorama 2004 was pleased with its success,” said Robert Miller, president of the North Country Chapter. “We expect this year’s event to be even more successful with over vendor 100 tables and booths.  We want seniors to make the most of this event and to take advantage of this opportunity to engage their legislature.”

Some of this year’s vendors include Alice Hyde, Canton-Potsdam, Carthage , Claxton-Hepburn and Massena Memorial Hospitals ; Brushton Moira, Fort Covington , Malone and Massena Adult Centers ; Clinton , Franklin County , St. Lawrence and St. Regis Mohawk Offices for the Aging; as well as State agencies and many more senior organizations.

In addition to discussion forums and vendor services, seniors will be able to take part in an afternoon bingo session, raffles and a door prize drawing that includes a 1-carat $1,200 diamond ring donated by the Akwesasne Mohawk Casino.

Free entertainment is being provided with music by the Thundertones and “Scuba” Steve Conners and a dance presentation by the Country Border Cloggers and Akwesasne Cloggers groups. An affordable lunch menu will also be served while seniors enjoy the day’s events and speeches.
