Status: Full-time, permanent, non-exempt
Under the general direction of the ECDP Education Coordinator, the Culture and Language Provider is responsible for enriching the Early Childhood Development Program by incorporating Mohawk language and culture into the program, encouraging participants to develop a strong sense of who they are. The Culture and Language Provider will provide the parents, staff and home-based childcare providers with training and workshops to strengthen their knowledge of the Mohawk language and culture so they can more effectively share this knowledge with our children and adults in our program.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING:
- Adhere to all policies, standards, and procedures as dictated by Tribal Personnel Policies, NYS OCFS Child Care Licensing Regulations, the ECDP Behavior Management Plan, the NAEYC Code of Ethical Conduct, and all other applicable regulations pertaining to health, safety and sanitation.
- Work in conjunction with the ECDP staff to develop developmentally appropriate curriculum that includes written, pictorial, and verbal representations of traditional language and culture, as well as traditional music, dance, games, and other relevant activities that address the cultural traditions of the Akwesasne community.
- Coordinate with outside agencies to provide staff, children, and families with programming to enhance the knowledge of traditional language and culture, including socials for classrooms, and training sessions for staff.
- Work in close collaboration with classroom teachers to ensure a smooth integration of culture and language into daily lessons and routines and submit weekly plans showing evidence of collaboration.
- Work with the ECDP staff to meet annual program goals related to language and culture.
- Provide classroom support when needed.
- Report incidents or allegations of abuse to the Education Coordinator.
- Other related duties as assigned.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
- Minimum High School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED) with job related experience.
- Strong knowledge of the Mohawk language and traditions.
- Knowledge of Mohawk history, stories and music.
- One-year experience teaching in the early childhood field is preferred.
- Knowledge of Head Start and the Child Care program is preferred.
OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES:
- Strong oral and written communication skills required.
- Must have computer skills including Microsoft programs.
- Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs.
- Exhibit a friendly and courteous manner when dealing with our employees, fellow associates, parents and community members.
- Establish and maintain effective and healthy working relationships with others, including staff, family members and others who may be under distress or duress.
- Communicate and relate effectively with program staff, families and children.
- Positively deal with crisis situations. Deal with hostile, aggressive persons or situations.
- Will be aware and sensitive to the needs that may arise when handling stressful and demanding circumstances. Immediate debriefing will be made available.
- Will assist in maintaining a safe working environment in the ECDP.
- Will not knowingly, carelessly, or recklessly divulge any information or documentation which has to come to their attention as an employee of the Tribe and which it is the duty of the employee to keep confidential; or will not knowingly, carelessly, or recklessly divulge any information of a personal nature in relation to fellow employees or clients.
- Promote a positive image of the ECDP program through healthy relationships with the families and employees served by the program.
- Foster a climate of respect and integrity.
- To implement regulations that govern programs for young children; acknowledging that all staff will cooperate to implement a program that far exceeds minimum regulations.
- To ensure that the rights and needs of children are the highest priority, while also recognizing the needs of other family members.
- To contribute to the ongoing review, evaluation and modification of services as needed by the community, families and children.
- To provide information about the services of the program to the community.
- To engage staff in cooperative problem solving, planning and continuing evaluation of themselves and the program.
