Status: Full-time, temporary/seasonal, non-exempt

SUMMARY: Under supervision, perform manual labor necessary to develop, maintain, or protect areas such as forests, forested areas, woodlands, wetlands, and rangelands through such activities as raising and transporting seedlings; combating insects, pests, and diseases harmful to plant life; and building structures to control water, erosion, and leaching of soil. Includes forester aides, seedling pullers, and tree planters:


  • Plants trees in conformance to established standards using hand tools
  • Cuts trees, brush, and other growth, using chainsaw, ax, brush-hook, and other hand tools or power tools to clear land for to control growth or for fire prevention.
  • Piling brush and feeding into shredding or chipping machine.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: There are no supervisor requirements for this position.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: Ability to work from verbal directions. Ability to work with others. Ability to make minor adjustments to hand and power equipment. Knowledge of urban forestry or landscape type operations and techniques such as tree planting, cutting and trimming and equipment operation. Ability to work safely.

The ability to perform tasks at or above the job standard. The standard is being able to perform assignments satisfactorily. Standards include conforming to instructions received during training, operator’s manuals and instructions

Operate chain saw and other power equipment in accordance with training provided. Observations made by foreman, corrective action taken immediately if required.

Operate transport equipment safely. Observations made by foreman, corrective action taken immediately if required.

Motor Vehicle operated properly and safely. Perform daily vehicle safety checks. Observations made by foreman. Documentation made and retained.

Perform maintenance operations and field repairs as required by equipment operator’s manuals and/or supervisor’s instructions. Observations made by foreman, corrective action taken immediately if required. Maintenance records kept. Personnel assigned specific equipment will be held accountable for its condition, maintenance and service records.

Laborers will be responsible for providing their own safety footwear.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: Minimum High School Diploma or GED equivalent. One-year laborer experience in grounds-keeping, landscaping, forestry or closely related work preferred.

Consideration will be given to an equivalent, relevant combination of education/experience.

OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES: New York State Logger Safety Training (NYLT) or equivalent certification is a plus, First Aid and CPR is a plus.

Must be at least 18 years of age, have and maintain a valid driver’s license with a clean drivers abstract in accordance with the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe’s Fleet Policy.
