SUMMARY:  Provide technical assistance to the Tribe’s Forestry Technician and other Natural Resource Program Managers regarding the conservation of soil, water, forests, or related natural resources. May compile data pertaining to size, content, condition, and other characteristics of forest tracts, under the direction of foresters; or train and lead forest workers in forest propagation, fire prevention and suppression. May assist conservation scientists in managing, improving, and protecting rangelands and wildlife habitats. Excludes Conservation Scientists (19-1031) and Foresters (19-1032).

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:

  • Assist the Tribal Forestry Technician with the management of forest protection activities
  • Assist with the survey, measure, and map access roads and forest areas such as burns, cut-over areas, experimental plots, and timber sales sections
  • Operating Vehicles, Mechanized Devices, or Equipment — Running, maneuvering, navigating, or driving vehicles or mechanized equipment, such as ATV/UTV, passenger vehicles, unmanned aircraft, or water craft. 
  • Performing General Physical Activities — Performing physical activities that require considerable use of your arms and legs and moving your whole body, such as climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping, and handling of materials.
  • Communicating with Supervisors, Peers, or Subordinates — Providing information to supervisors, co-workers, and subordinates by telephone, in written form, e-mail, or in person.
  • Getting Information — Observing, receiving, and otherwise obtaining information from all relevant sources.
  • Making Decisions and Solving Problems — Analyzing information and evaluating results to choose the best solution and solve problems.
  • Record research or operational data
  • Collect environmental data or samples
  • Set up laboratory or field equipment

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: None.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: Minimum, A.A.S. degree in forestry or natural sciences.   Technician Assistants must be able to identify tree species from twig and bark samples, must be able to read a map and use a hand compass.  Experience or training in Geographic Information System (GIS) use, surveying, aerial photogrammetry, or type mapping is preferred, but not required.  Person must be self-motivated and able to work under varied weather and environmental conditions.

OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES: Strong oral and written communication skills required. Must have excellent computer skills including word, excel, and experience with varying databases. Geographic Information System (GIS) training is an asset but not required.

Must be at least 18 years of age, have and maintain a valid driver’s license with a clean drivers abstract in accordance with the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe’s Fleet Policy.
