SUMMARY: The purpose of this position is to enforce criminal laws by collecting and processing information applicable to criminal activities and violations of criminal law, conducting criminal investigations and coordinating felony investigations regarding violations of Federal, State, and/or Tribal law.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:

  • Investigate criminal offenses in accordance with the Federal, State, and or Tribal Law
  • Assist Officers and other investigation team members with criminal investigations, case presentation, phone calls and other matters that may arise
  • Assist other programs, offices and agencies with sexual assault, domestic violence and child abuse cases
  • Collaborate with other offices and agencies to exchange information and coordinate activities
  • Collect and record physical information about arrested suspects, including fingerprints, height and weight measurements, and photographs
  • Determine scope, timing , and direction of investigations
  • Compare Crime scene fingerprints with those from suspects or fingerprint files to identify perpetrators, using computers
  • Identify case issues and evidence needed, based on analysis of charges, complaints, or allegations of law violations
  • Examine records to locate links in chains of evidence or information
  • Obtain and use search and arrest warrants
  • Obtain and verify evidence by interviewing and observing suspects and witnesses or by analyzing records
  • Prepare reports that detail investigation findings
  • Record evidence and documents, using equipment such as cameras and photocopy machines
  • Search for and collect evidence, such as fingerprints, using investigative equipment
  • Serve subpoenas or other official papers
  • Testify before grand juries concerning criminal activity investigations
  • Examine crime scenes to obtain evidence
  • Be on call to help when needed by your department or other offices and agencies
  • Perform undercover assignments and maintain surveillance and monitor for illegal and suspicious activity.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required to successfully complete the essential duties of the position with or without reasonable accommodation. Must be willing to obtain certification and training to serve as Certified Police Crime Scene, Evidence Specialist Technician, and Crime Scene Photography

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: High School Diploma or equivalent. Must be a police officer certified with the State of New York Division of Criminal Justice Service. Some College and/or Degree considered a plus. Has a minimum 3 years of experience as a patrol officer and has extensive experience as a uniformed police officer, or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the requisite knowledge, skills and abilities for this position. Has or is willing to acquire relevant training pertinent to above listed duties and responsibilities. Has received above average yearly evaluations.

OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES: Strong oral and written communication skills required. Must have excellent computer skills including word, excel, and experience with varying databases. Ability to exercise discretion in many intense situations and practice confidentiality

REASONING ABILITY: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of variable situations. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

Possession of a valid State Driver License in accordance with Fleet Policy.

ELIGIBILITY LIST

A list of qualified candidates is created from interviews that may be used to appoint individuals to similar positions within the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe for a period of six months.

Testing in the applicable skills may be required as part of the interview process.

EMPLOYEE COVID VACCINATION POLICY

The Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe has adopted a “Tribal Employee Vaccination Policy” that requires all employees to be “Fully Vaccinated” against the Coronavirus. Applicants are not required to disclose their vaccination status at the time of application; however, they must do so upon becoming the successful candidate. The successful applicant must submit their proof of vaccination status, apply for a Medical Exemption or begin the vaccination process. If the successful applicant is not vaccinated, they will be required to receive their first vaccine dose prior to starting employment and must receive their second dose, if applicable, within 30 days of employment.
