SUMMARY: The Recycling Coordinator, under the supervision of the Transfer Station Solid Waste Manager, will collaborate with staff and customers to promote waste diversion initiatives. This role involves developing and evaluating the Tribe's recycling and waste reduction programs.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide analytical and administrative support, including waste audits and maintaining records of recycling materials. 
  • Monitor recycling pick-up/drop-off for compliance with the SRMT Solid Waste Code and investigate violations. 
  • Initiate recycling and reuse programs, select container types and locations, and train employees on safe recycling procedures. 
  • Communicate program objectives through newsletters and social media to educate the community about recycling. 
  • Participate in public education events, such as Earth Day, delivering presentations on recycling and reuse. 
  • Oversee tribal recycling activities and coordinate household hazardous waste collections. 
  • Evaluate strategies for improving recycling and waste reduction, and recommend program enhancements. 
  • Assist with grant applications and prepare reports for awarded grants. 
  • Ensure proper handling of recyclable materials and maintain compliance with safety standards. 
  • Operate vehicles and equipment for material handling and perform light maintenance on collection vehicles. 

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: There are no supervisory requirements for this position.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: 

  • High School Diploma or GED AND Three (3) years of environmental technician experience solid waste management experience or customer service experience in a related field. 

OR 

  • An Associate Degree with coursework in environmental science or biological studies AND One (1) year's experience in the recycling profession. 

Preferred 

  • Bachelor’s Degree in environmental science or a closely related field. 

 

OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of solid waste, recycling, and reuse methods, procedures, and equipment.
  • Maintain the ability to work as a team member;
  • The ability to obtain a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) is preferred
  • Must obtain Heavy Equipment Operators certification within 1-year of employment and maintain it annually
  • Must obtain RCRA training and certification within six months of employment;
  • May be required to work weekends and evening hours; 
  • May be required to travel for training and workshops;
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills;
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office (including Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Outlook);
  • Ability to effectively manage client relationships. Interact effectively with individuals from diverse social, cultural, and economic backgrounds. Work independently and make critical decisions;
  • Ability to perform physical requirements of the position with or without reasonable accommodations and lift to (50) pounds;
  • A general understanding of: applicable Federal, State, and Local legislation and regulations related to materials management; general terminology regarding waste, recycling, and resource management; product characterization and materials identification.

REASONING ABILITY: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

Possession of a valid Driver's License by Fleet Policy.   Must have and maintain a valid driver’s license with a clean driver abstract in accordance with the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe’s Fleet Policy.
