Community Announcement - Tribe Issues Safety Advice for Power Outage

Oct 29, 2012

Hurricane Sandy may result in power outages. The key to success with power outages is preparation. Make sure any battery-operated radios are out and have fresh batteries. Flash lights and lanterns should also be taken out and place in convenient areas so they can be located easily in the dark. Clear floors and walkways of any obstructions to avoid injuries from tripping. Prepare an overnight bag ahead of time in case it’s necessary to evacuate and make sure to include all necessary medications in the bag. Prepare notes to leave on your entrance and exit doors. If evacuation becomes necessary, place the notes on the doors to let others know your whereabouts.

Use extreme caution with candles and lanterns that have a live flame. Use short candles that cannot be easily knocked over. Place candles on non-flammable dishes or aluminum pie pans. Have some containers of water or fire extinguishers handy in case a candle gets knocked over.

If using a generator, DO NOT operate the generator indoors or where exhaust fumes can enter living spaces. Do not smoke or have an open flame nearby when filling or re-filling generators.
