Akwesasne, NY—– The Saint Regis Mohawk Tribal Council is encouraging school district residents to participate in the Salmon River School Board Election being held on Tuesday, Onerahtohkó:wa/May 17, 2016 . The Tribal Council is asking Akwesasne community members to join them in supporting candidates Craig Jock and Jordan Lauzon as they seek to fill two positions on the nine-person board.

“Our youth represent our future,” said Tribal Chief Beverly Cook. She added, “We would be remiss; as a community; if we did not ensure they have necessary support, resources and representation available to them within the school district.”

Craig Jock is running unopposed for a five-year seat on the school board, while Jordan Lauzon is running against Mike Sisto for a two-year seat that was vacated by Roger LaPage in November 2015. The five-year term commences on July 1, 2016 and expires on June 30, 2021, with the two-year term commencing on July 1, 2016 and expiring on June 30, 2018.

“Craig Jock has been a lifetime employee with the Tribe and has gained a firm understanding of issues being faced by our community’s youth,” stated Tribal Chief Ron LaFrance. He noted, “Along with Jordan Lauzon, I am confident that Craig will help ensure that all children with the school district receive the best educational opportunities.”

The Salmon River Central School District is one of thirteen districts in New York State that provides education to Native American students. It is the only one however, where the majority of the student body population is Native. With the community’s support, Jock and Lauzon’s election will continue to ensure Mohawk interests on the school board are comparable to the student population.

“We must continue to maintain our community’s overwhelming support for our children’s education,” remarked Tribal Chief Eric Thompson. He added, “The participation of our community members in the school board elections contributes immensely towards the overall success of our children.”

The Saint Regis Mohawk Tribal Council is encouraging school district residents to support Craig Jock and Jordan Lauzon in the Salmon River Central School Board Election on Tuesday, May 17, 2016, from Noon to 8:00 p.m., in Salmon River’s High School Auditorium.
