Akwesasne Leadership Lifts 'State of Emergency'

Nov 1, 2012

The Emergency Operations Command Centers for the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne and the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe issued the following joint statement this morning on post-Tropical Storm Sandy:

“Post-Tropical Storm Sandy is currently located over Central Ontario and continues to weaken. It will however, continue to bring rain and light winds to Akwesasne over the next few days. The Emergency Operations Command Center is advising the community that the storm no longer poses a direct threat to our community.

As a result, the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne and the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribal Council have taken steps this morning to lift the State of Emergency. The Mohawk Councils also took steps to close the Emergency Operations Command Centers and emergency measures that were implemented to deal with the storm’s impact.

The Emergency Operation Command Centers for the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne and the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe were activated on Monday, October 29th to closely monitor Hurricane Sandy. Their combined efforts helped to ensure that a coordinated response was undertaken to deal with the storm. The Emergency Operation Centers also advised community members on the storm’s progress, as it continued to be downgraded to a post-Tropical Storm.

Akwesasne leaders expressed their appreciation to MCA Emergency Measures Officer Regina Jacobs and SRMT Emergency Planning Coordinator Sarah Sunday-Diabo for their work. Their combined efforts, as well as those of essential personnel, helped to ensure that our community was prepared and took the appropriate course of action.”
