Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe Issues Fishing Regulations for Non-Members

Akwesasne Territory. Recognizing the spiritual, cultural and economic value of fish, the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribal Council recently issued regulations to govern non-tribal member fishing in the Akwesasne Territory. “Fish, and other natural resources of the Tribe are valuable Tribal assets,” said Tribal Chief Mark Garrow. “It’s our responsibility to preserve and protect these resources for future generations. This is why we have adopted these regulations.”
Tribal Council adopted Tribal Council Resolution 2011 – 52 (TCR 2011 - 52) enacting the Non-Member Fishing Regulations and law to be enforced in conjunction with Tribal Council Resolution 2010 – 43. TCR 2010 – 43 adopts New York’s Department of Environmental Conservation’s (DEC’s) Statewide Angling Regulations. “These regulations will specifically apply to all non-tribal members who fish in the territory waters,” remarked Tribal Chief Randy Hart. The non-member fishing regulations clarify the process for non-tribal members to fish in the territory and define their responsibilities.
Tribal Chief Ron LaFrance noted, “The regulations won’t limit the inherent right of tribal members to fish on the territory as long as their activities are in line with other applicable Tribal Laws.”
The Tribal Council officially adopted the Non-Member Fishing Regulations on November 22, 2011. The non-member fishing regulations are posted on the Tribe’s website, www.srmt-nsn.gov. Interested individuals can go to the “Latest Publications” tab to find it, but must come to the Community Tribal Building to fill out the fishing permit application.
Applicants may turn in or mail in their applications to the Tribal Compliance Department at the Tribal Community Building, 412 State Route 37, Akwesasne, NY 13655. Applicants should include the annual permit fee of $40.
