Permits Now Available

Akwesasne Territory -- The Saint Regis Mohawk Tribal Council adopted Non Member Fishing regulations to regulate and permit non-tribal members fishing in the Akwesasne Territory. The regulations require that Non Members must possess a Non Member Fishing Permit from the Tribe’s Compliance Department.

In the fall of 2011, Tribal Council adopted the Non Member Fishing Regulations into Tribal law. This law pertains to non members only and includes permit requirements, regulations, size limits, daily allowances and a designated season for non members to be fishing on the territory. The law requires a non member to obtain a Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe Non Member Fishing Permit. The regulations specify the minimum size limits by species and daily limits. The non member fishing season is also stipulated in the regulations and indicates that non members may not enter the territory waterways to fish for species not within season. This was adopted to ensure that non members were not entering the Territory and utilizing tribal members’ inherit rights to obtain fish within Tribal waters. The regulations do not limit the inherent right of members to fish on the territory.

The officially adopted Non-Member Fishing Regulations are posted on the Tribe’s website, www.srmt-nsn.gov. Interested individuals can go to the “Latest Publications” tab to review the law and regulations. However, non members fishing permits must be obtained in person at the Tribe’s Compliance department located at the Tribal Administration/Community Building located at 412 State Route 37.
