Tribe Hires New Executive Director

Aug 22, 2012

The Saint Regis Mohawk Tribal Council has hired Tsiorasa Barreiro as the new Executive Director for tribal operations. He will oversee all programs and services provided by the tribal government. “This is a very complex job,” remarked Barreiro. “It’s going to be a challenge and I look forward to working with all the division directors and tribal council.”

The tribe operates over 80 programs in many different areas including education, health services, environment, economic development and human services, to name a few. All Division Directors will report to Barreiro.

Barreiro has spent the past decade in the private sector, most recently serving as Vice President of the fifth largest Native American-owned company in the United States, Ongweoweh Corp, a full-service packaging solutions business located in Ithaca New York. Prior to that he worked in the American Indian Program at Cornell University, directing the Akwe:kon House. He has 12 years of experience in Enterprise Development, project management and administration.

“The process to choose a new executive Director was very competitive,” said Randy Hart, Tribal Chief. “I’m sure that Tsiorasa will do a fine job and take the tribe into the future in a good way.”

Barreiro received a Communications degree in 2000 from Cornell University. He also earned an Executive Education certificate in business from the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth College in 2010. That year, Barreiro was honored by the National Center for American Indian Enterprise Development as a Native American Forty Under 40 recipient. He is an active community volunteer, serving on the Board of Directors and as a coach for the Akwesasne Minor Lacrosse Association, and as a coach for the Akwesasne Eagles youth flag football team.
“Leadership is about service. My first goal is to help staff feel appreciated and respected,” he noted. “Making progress is a team effort, one that I’m looking forward to.”

Barreiro is the son of Katsi Cook and Dr. Jose Barreiro. He is married to Randi Rourke Barreiro; they reside in Akwesasne with their three children, Kanatires, age 10, Tehokwirathe, seven, and Karakwatiron, two. He is slated to begin work on September 4, 2012.
