Akwesasne Community Beautification Projects Planned

Jun 2, 2016

The Saint Regis Mohawk Tribal Council and the Akwesasne Cultural Tourism Working Group met with representatives from the Project for Public Spaces, Inc., to begin planning for a series of public workshops this fall to develop several community beautification projects. The workshops are the result of a $10,000 Rural Design Award won by the Akwesasne Cultural Center in March 2016, in partnership with the Working Group--only one of two awarded to a Native community. The workshops will be held from November 17-19, 2016 and will help create an action plan for incorporating culturally relevant Mohawk design into buildings, signage, and landscaping located along Akwesasne’s State Route 37.

The Citizens' Institute on Rural Design™ is a National Endowment for the Arts leadership initiative in partnership with the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Project for Public Spaces, Inc., and the Orton Family Foundation.
