Winter Weather Waterline Safety Tips

Nov 28, 2017

AKWESASNE — The Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe’s Water Department is reminding community members that winter weather is upon us and, with that, is providing the following tips to help homeowners and the Department to avoid having a disruption in water service:

1. Clearly mark your water shutoff valve. Place a piece of wood or long marker next to the shutoff so it doesn’t get hit by all-terrain vehicles, snowmobiles and especially snow plows. Not clearly marking the water shutoff valve risks it being broken off, with the cost to repair it being the homeowner’s responsibility.

2. Wrap your waterline in heat tape if it is not located inside of an enclosed basement and is at risk of freezing.

3. Keep your fire hydrant clear of snow. In the event of an emergency, fire fighters need to access the hydrant quickly, so please do not push snow up and around it.

For more information, please contact the Tribe’s Water Department at (518) 358-4205.
