Road Repairs Scheduled for Frogtown Road and Tarbell Road

Jul 6, 2018

AKWESASNE — The Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe is pleased to announce that funding has been made available to resurface two additional road projects this season. $280,000 in funding was provided to make much-needed repairs to Frogtown Road and Tarbell Road, two years ahead of their originally scheduled reconstruction dates.

“The SRMT Roads Program has been very busy expanding Business Park Road off State Route 37 and are on schedule for making necessary improvements to other roads throughout the community,” shared Construction Manager Brent Herne. Herne added, “Frogtown Road and Tarbell Road were previously identified as two roads that are in need of repair.”

Beginning on Ohiarihkó:wa/July 10, 2018; work to true and level the roads will begin before adding 1.5 inches of overlay on a 2.2-mile stretch of Frogtown Road. When completed, the paving crew will then move onto make similar improvements on 1.6 miles of Tarbell Road. Each of these road improvements should take approximately two weeks to complete.

In the Tribal Transportation Improvement Plan shared with community members last year, Tarbell Road was initially scheduled for maintenance in 2020, while improvements to Frogtown Road were planned for 2019 and 2020. Due to the poor road conditions however, and multiple requests from community members, the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe decided to carry out road repair work this season.

Road projects typically require two years of accumulated BIA funding to complete and often need to be supplemented by an annual Tribal General Fund allocation of $50,000. Although there is a tremendous need to repair community roads, time is always required for funding to catch up to the identified needs.

An allocation of $280,000 was granted from the Tribal General Fund and Capital Projects Investment Fund to improve the safety and quality of Frogtown Road and Tarbell Road. These repairs will ensure road safety for motorists and pedestrians until the more extensive reconstruction projects established in the Tribal Transportation Improvement Plan take place.

Motorists are reminded to exercise caution when approaching construction zones.
