St. Regis River Area of Concern Update -- January 24, 2018

AKWESASNE—The Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe’s Emergency Planning Office is notifying local residents that the flood watch along the St. Regis River has been downgraded to an Area of Concern. This Area of Concern includes locations from the Hogansburg Bridge to the northern portion of the Akwesasne community for the following roadways: St. Regis Road, North Street, Cree Road, Mose Cook Road and portions of Cook Road.

The USGS Water Station located at Brasher Center, NY reports that the water level for the St. Regis River has receded since its gage height of 9.68 feet at 2:00 a.m. on January 13, 2018. The gage height for the St. Regis River is currently stable at 7.59 feet (as of 12:30pm), which is slightly above the normal seasonal height of 7.0 feet.

On Thursday, January 25th, tribal staff from the Tribe’s Emergency Planning Office and the Compliance Department will canvass the Area of Concern to conduct home assessments. It is intended to assist homeowners in determining basement conditions and identifying items that may be susceptible to possible flood; including heating equipment, fuel tank, household appliances (washer/dryer/hot water heater), sump pump conditions and possible hazards.

The Emergency Planning Office continues to encourage residents in the Area of Concern to plan, prepare and increase awareness. Please be proactive and follow the instructions provided in the flood preparedness brochure. A copy of the pamphlet was distributed to all household in the Area of Concern and is available to download from the Tribe’s Facebook page and website at www.srmt-nsn.gov.

The Area of Concern is still being monitored, but residents are asked to please call the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribal Police at (518) 358-9200 or Franklin County Emergency Services at “9-1-1” or if they require assistance.
