St. Regis River Flood Watch Upgraded to Flood Warning

AKWESASNE—The Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe’s Emergency Planning Office is notifying residents that the National Weather Service in Burlington, Vermont has upgraded the Flood Watch for the St. Regis River to a Flood Warning. As a result, resident along the following roadways should prepare for a possible evacuation due to flooding: St. Regis Road near the Hoganburg Dam, Mill Street, North Street, McNeil Road, Cree Road, Mose Cook Road and portions of Cook Road located in the flood area.

The USGS Water Station located at Brasher Center, NY reports that the water level for the St. Regis River has increased and is expected to peak at 7:00 p.m. this evening, which will result in the river cresting its banks. Combined with ice melt, river levels may fluctuate rapidly with little or no warning. Residents in low-lying flood prone areas should remain alert for possible flooding due to ice jams.

The Emergency Planning Office continues to encourage residents in the flood area to plan, prepare and increase awareness. Please be proactive and follow the instructions provided in the flood preparedness brochure that was distributed to individual households. A copy of the pamphlet is also available to download from the Tribe’s Facebook page and website at www.srmt-nsn.gov.

The Saint Regis Mohawk Tribal Police is monitoring the water level, with the assistance of with the assistance of the Hogansburg-Akwesane Volunteer Fire Department.
