SRMT Family Court Code Public Comment Period

AKWESASNE -- The Saint Regis Mohawk Tribal Clerk has opened a 30-day public comment period on a Draft Family Court Code for marriages, divorce, and custody. Two virtual presentations are being provided to share information and to gain feedback from membership. All tribal members are welcomed and encouraged to participate in the code’s development

The first virtual meeting took place on Tuesday, December 1st; which began the 30-day comment period that will conclude on Friday, December 31, 2021. The second virtual presentation is scheduled for:

Meeting: Family Court Code Presentation on Marriage, Divorce, and Custody
Date/Time: Wednesday, Tsiothóhrha/December 15, 2021 @ 5:00 p.m.
Location: Tribal Members Portal (via ZOOM), www.srmt-nsn.gov

Information on the draft code is available on the Tribal Members Portal; which includes a PDF version of presentations provided, copy of the Draft Family Court Code, and a video recording of the December 1st virtual meeting. The link for the December 15th virtual presentation will also be available on the portal. For help accessing the portal, please contact the Communications Department at (518) 358-2272.

Along with the Tribal Members Portal, a copy of the Draft Family Court Code is available upon request from the Tribal Clerk’s Office, Office of the General Counsel, or the main reception desk at the Ionkwakiohkwaronon Tribal Administration Building.

The deadline to submit written comments for the Draft Family Court Code is Friday, December 31st by emailing public.comment@srmt-nsn.gov, providing them during the December 15th virtual presentation, or by mailing or delivering to:

Once written comments have been reviewed, the final version of the Family Court Code will be posted once more for tribal members to review, prior to the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribal Council signing the code into law by tribal council resolution.
