Tribe’s EOC Reports 2 Active COVID-19 Cases, 21 Quarantined

Aug 5, 2021

AKWESASNE — The Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe’s Emergency Operations Center and Health Services is reporting one (1) new case of COVID-19 today in Akwesasne’s southern portion. They are pleased that one (1) community member has been released from isolation however, two (2) active cases remain under the Tribe’s jurisdiction. Through contact tracing, the number of family members and friends in quarantine due to exposure has increased to 21. We wish them all a safe and complication-free recovery.

COVID-19 variants are continuing to emerge and spread among unvaccinated individuals, including the newly discovered Epsilon and Lamda, so the EOC and Health Services are urging everyone to please get vaccinated. The variants will continue to evolve and will pose a significant risk to public health until community immunity is reached, which is at least 70% of local residents vaccinated. As of July 29th, only 45.6% of residents are fully protected—leaving around 4,300 of eligible community members susceptible to the virus. This does not include youth under the age of 12-years old who cannot get the vaccine.

With the Franklin County Fair scheduled to start tomorrow on August 6th, individuals are reminded that wearing a mask is still required for all unvaccinated individuals. Masks are the most effective tool to prevent the virus from spreading and is particularly important when social distancing is not possible.
