Kristopher Johnson Joins Akwesasne Housing Authority Commission

AKWESASNE -- The Saint Regis Mohawk Tribal Council is pleased to announce the appointment of Kristopher Johnson to the Akwesasne Housing Authority (AHA) Board of Commissioners. Johnson was appointed with the adoption of Tribal Council Resolution 2023-44 at the Tribal Council Work Session held on Wednesday, Seskehkó:wa/September 27, 2023.

Johnson was selected in accordance with the Tribal Board/Commissions Selection Policy that established an AHA Board of Commissioners Selection Review Committee. The Selection Review Committee; comprised of representatives from the SRMT Office of Boards and Commissions, Legal Department, and Chief of Staff, met and unanimously agreed Kristopher Johnson be appointed by the Tribal Council.

Since November 2022, Johnson has served as Data Entry Clerk for the SRMT Early Learning Center, where he ensures the accuracy of information being utilized in preparing reports and studies. His previously worked for three (3) years as Pharmacy Clerk for SRMT Health Services. The attention to detail and organizational skills he attained from both positions made him an ideal candidate.

As a result, he was appointed by TCR 2023-44 and received his oath of office before Tribal Clerk Summer Bero during a brief ceremony held in the lobby of the Ionkwakiohkwaronon Tribal Administration Building on Monday, Kenténha/October 2, 2023. Upon taking his oath, her will now serve a four-year term that will end in September 2027.

The AHA Board of Commissioners is comprised of seven (7) individuals who manage the affairs of the Authority, directly supervise the Housing Authority Executive Director, and assist in the development and adoption of policies that govern AHA operations.

They offer guidance on homeownership or rental options and often undertake studies on housing needs in the Akwesasne community. Their findings are used to provide counseling, technical assistance, and help identify funding opportunities for Mohawk families and individuals to realize their dream of becoming a homeowner.

Akwesasne Housing Authority Board of Commissioners are appointed by Tribal Council for staggered terms of one (1), two (2), three (3) and four (4) years. Along with Kristopher Johnson; the AHA Commission is comprised of Kenneth Jock (Chair), Norman Tarbell, Connie Thompson, Noah Ransom Jr., Brenda LaFrance, and Kimberly Ransom-Herne.
