SUMMARY: The Ethics Officer is a Three Year, Part Time Term position responsible for the professional administration of the SRMT Ethics Ordinance to ensure that elected officials are accountable to the Tribal Membership and act with honesty, integrity, fairness and impartiality in their conduct.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:

  • Receive, process and research complaints having to do with alleged Ethics Violations
  • Ensure all complaints are signed and notarized
  • Provide annual training to all elected officials subject to the Ethics Ordinance regarding ethical obligations and standards of Conduct
  • Ensure completion and proper filing of annual Disclosure statements by Elected Officials
  • Establish rules and regulations necessary to govern the procedural aspects of the SRMT Ethics Ordinance within 60 days of his or her appointment.
  • Administer and enforce compliance with the procedural aspects of the SRMT Ethics Ordinance and with all decisions rendered regarding Ethics Complaints
  • Establish a process for hearing appeals, in accordance with the terms and criteria of the SRMT Ethics Ordinance
  • Create, retain, and track administrative paperwork on all work associated with the Ethics Office
  • Perform swearing-in duties and ceremonies for Ethics Commission members
  • Prepare and submit annual summary report
  • Exhibit a helpful and courteous demeanor when dealing with co-workers and community members
  • Maintain Confidentiality
  • Additional related duties as assigned with Ordinance amendments as they occur

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: The Ethics Officer of the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe shall/ be:

  • At least thirty (30) years old
  • An enrolled member of the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe;
  • Have no prior convictions of any serious crimes (i.e., fraud, moral turpitude);
  • Does not hold elective or appointed office at the time of the appointment;
  • In possession of a bachelor’s degree, or demonstrate equivalent life experience or competency, in an area of study that would qualify the person to act in the position of Ethics Officer (such as law, government affairs, accounting, ethics or human resources);
  • Possess knowledge and understanding of Mohawk political history and have lived in Akwesasne for a “substantial portion” of his or her life;
  • Not have any actual or perceived conflicts of interest or personal interests with any one particular special interest group.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: There are no supervisory requirements for this position

 

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be able to read, write, speak and understand English
  • Must possess strong communication, organizational and leadership skills
  • Knowledge of Mohawk language, culture and community dynamics will be considered an asset
