Summary: The Peer Mentor is responsible for providing support to participants of the HWC. The Peer Mentor will also serve on the HWC Team.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following:
- Provides support and mentoring to Healing to Wellness Court participants and alumni
- Understands and complies with all confidentiality matters related to participants and the Healing to Wellness Court
- Attends all Healing to Wellness Court team meetings and court hearings, acting as a bridge for alumni and current participants
- Through leading by example, will support participants with their coping strategies
- Aids participants in identifying appropriate peer support groups
- May assist with transportation needs of participants, as approved by the Healing to Wellness Judge or Coordinator
- Assists Coordinator to develop and oversee community services and volunteer projects for treatment court participants and alumni
- Plans group activities and outings
- Maintains attendance log for group meetings
- Assists members in finding appropriate resources for issues that arise
- Facilitate group discussion
- Actively identify and create linkages to community resources (recovery community, educational, vocational, social, cultural, spiritual resources, self-help groups, professional services etc.) that support the recovering person’s goals and interests.
- Maintain contact with participants to ensure ongoing success in recovery
- Attends and participates in conferences, workshops, meetings and committees as needed.
- In conjunction with the HWC Coordinator, plans and budgets for any expenditures associated with the program
- In conjunction with the Coordinator, assist on grant proposals and prepare budget estimates and justifications.
- All related duties as assigned.
Supervisory Responsibilities: There are no supervisor requirements for this position.
Qualification Requirements: To perform this job successfully, an individual must possess a strong commitment to confidentiality, excellent written and oral communication skills; have strong analytical and interpersonal skills; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships; ability to prioritize and organize as well as plan and manage multiple assignments efficiently and effectively. The individual must demonstrate professional behavior and ethical standard of conduct. The position also requires problem-solving and change-intervention skills. Must be a person with lived experiences with a substance use disorder who has been in recovery for at least two years.
Education and/or Experience:
- Associates Degree (AA/AS)
OR
- NYS Peer Specialist Training
OR
- Equivalent combination of education and experience
Other Skills and Abilities: Strong oral and written communication skills required. Must have excellent computer skills. Experience with addiction and recovery is an asset.
Reasoning Ability: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
Must have and maintain a valid driver’s license in accordance with the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe’s Fleet Policy.
The successful candidate must pass a drug test and background check prior to employment.
