SUMMARY: The Water Resources Technician (Technician) will perform field tests to monitor impacts to aquatic resources including water quality, wetlands and fish resources. The Technician is required to follow procedures, summarize results and ensure completeness, under the supervision of the Water Resources Program Manager.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:

  • Use various gear types to collect fish: e.g., seine, gillnet, electro-fishing, etc..
  • Safe operation of boat and backpack electrofishing equipment;
  • Collection of fish and wildlife population data;
  • Use fish and aquatic insect identification keys;
  • Collection of water, soil, sediment and biological samples;
  • Keep accurate and detailed field notes;
  • Maintain the sample chain of custody;
  • Proper use, maintenance, and calibration of water quality monitoring instruments;
  • Upload recorded field data and/or sampling analysis results;
  • Utilize computer software to perform statistical analysis of environmental data;
  • Long-term storage of data, both physical and electronic;
  • Cleaning, car,e and maintenance program supplies and equipment;
  • Develop quality assurance project plans and standard operating procedures
  • Comply with project plans and standard operating procedures;
  • Summarize data in written reports;
  • Complete monthly activity reports;
  • Take all necessary steps to maintain a safe work environment.
  • Ensure the accuracy of the data collected
  • Travel to complete training opportunities;
  • Public education and outreach;
  • Participate in staff meetings;
  • Participate in meetings with non-tribal entities related to water resources;
  • Other tasks pertaining to the Water Resources Program mission

     

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: May be required to supervise junior-level or seasonal staff and/or summer interns during the performance of fieldwork duties.

 

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The position requires effective written communication skills and proficiency with word processing programs. The position requires physical exertion, including the ability to carry equipment over uneven terrain, lifting or pulling nets, and the ability to wade in shallow rivers or streams.

 

 

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE: 

  • Applicants must have an Associate's degree or transcripts of coursework equaling 4 semesters in natural resources or a related field. 

 

Preferred

  • A Bachelor’s degree in natural resources or a related field.
  • The ability to swim and a boater’s safety certificate. (The opportunity to take a boater safety course is available if necessary.)
  • Must operate boat in a safe manner, and have the ability to demonstrate experience with safely trailering and launching boats. (The opportunity to take a trailer safety course is also available if necessary.)

LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read, understand and synthesize scientific information in reports and sampling plans.

MATHMATICAL SKILLS: The ability to perform basic statistical tests and analyze data is required; ability to format for storage and display data in tables or charts.

 

REASONING ABILITY: Ability to solve problems to effectively complete work plan objectives; anticipate and mitigate sources of uncertainty in the field;

Must be at least 18 years of age, have and maintain a valid driver’s license with a clean drivers abstract in accordance with the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe’s Fleet Policy.
