Proper Household & Business Wastewater Disposal

Jan 29, 2015

Akwesasne, NY – The Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe’s Water/Wastewater Department is seeking the assistance of households and businesses to keep the public sanitary sewer collection system free of obstructions. The Wastewater Department is reminding individuals that the improper disposal of solid waste can lead to residential and business sewer line backups, as well as unnecessary time spent removing trash from the collection system at the Wastewater Treatment Plant.

The following is a list of things to keep in mind to avoid backed up drains and to help keep the Wastewater Treatment Plant functioning for the benefit of the community:

  • Do not dispose of solid waste down the drain; including feminine products, paper towels, food waste, latex products, diapers, cotton swabs, cigarette butts, dental floss and other solid materials.
  • Do not allow vehicles to drive over or park on sewer lines. Learn where your sewer line is located and keep a sketch handy.
  • Do not allow leaky toilets, urinals and sinks to go unattended. Fix any leaks as soon as possible to help conserve water.

The Wastewater Department is responsible for the sewer mains, pump stations and the sewer treatment plant. It is not their responsibility to clear obstructions that occur in a sewer line between the residence or business and the main sewer collection system. This also applies to water supply service lines.

Please remember that private septic systems should have tanks pumped out by a licensed septic hauler every three to five years.
