AKWESASNE, NY - The Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe is notifying community members that more improvements are being made to the Tribe’s main parking lot that will further enhance the safety of travelers to and from Health Services and the Community Building. The latest stage of enhancements follows the reconfiguration and construction that was begun last year to provide safer merging lanes and additional parking spaces.
“After analyzing near misses and accidents occurring in the parking lots, the Tribe’s Safety Committee put forth recommendations to improve the safety of the public, the employees of the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe and all other visitors,” stated the Tribe’s Safety Officer Adrian McDonald. He noted, “The improvements include expanding the parking lots and changing traffic patterns, along with eliminating some parking spots for increased visibility and clearance. These changes took a lot of thought and cooperation from the members of the Tribe’s Safety Committee and will be reviewed monthly to gauge effectiveness.”
Last summer, the first row was shifted away from State Route 37 in July 2015 to provide a wider space for incoming/outgoing traffic. In addition, the second row was reduced to one lane to help widen the parking lot’s entry way—making it easier for vehicles and safer for pedestrians. Directional arrows will be stenciled to assist with the parking lot’s flow of traffic.
In November 2015, construction was completed on a new parking lot located behind the Family Support Building and East of Food Distribution. The new parking lot is for tribal employees to use, which will help increase the number of available spaces in the Tribe’s main parking lot for community members. Tribal employees will also have an expanded parking lot located directly behind the Community Building.
With the latest stage of improvements, community members are being asked to please take note of the following changes:
- The main parking lot in front of the tribal clinic will be for community members and employees with mobility issues only
- There will be enforcement of “No Parking” in the fire lane located in front of the clinic
- For safety reasons, there will be no through traffic allowed behind the Community Building
Individuals are being asked to please keep these latest improvements in mind to help support efforts to enhance the safety of everyone who utilizes the Tribe’s main parking lot.
