Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe Opposes Disruption to Kawehno:ke / Cornwall Island Residents

Mar 20, 2014

The Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe’s Emergency Planning Department has been notified of a potential plan by community members to claim ownership of the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) former Port of Entry building on Kawehno:ke/Cornwall Island on Saturday March 22, 2014. It is not our intent or plan to participate in any demonstration that may prohibit our people from crossing the bridge to travel within our territory. We urge consideration be given to the peace and safety of our people.

The Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe encourages community consultation when we have issues that affect our residents. The Tribe has not been contacted directly by the individual who has stated his intentions to enter the former CBSA building this Saturday. The Tribe opposes disruption to our community that results in any potential act that may prevent our community members from freely traveling throughout our territory. The Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe’s Emergency Planning Department’s responsibility is to ensure safe passage for emergency vehicles and first responders.

Our Emergency Planning Department is coordinating with the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne’s Emergency Measures staff to ensure the health and safety of our community.
