The Education Division of the SRMT with representatives of Farm and Wilderness Camps will hold an informational meeting at Ionkwakiohkwaró:ron Tribal Administration Building for families interested in exploring the opportunity for their child to attend a Farm & Wilderness Camp next summer.
The Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe has a partnership with Farm & Wilderness Camps (F&W) in Plymouth VT to offer summer camp opportunities for Tribal Youth. Since 1939, Farm & Wilderness has operated various summer camps on approximately 4,000 acres of Vermont woods near Plymouth VT (2 hours south of Burlington, VT). Camps are three weeks in duration. Full sessions go from July 1st to August 16th 2020.
Farm & Wilderness has had a connection to Akwesasne since the 1940s through the late Captain William Cook who served as a camp counselor and later had a camp named for him. This particular camp within F&W is named Flying Cloud and has incorporated native themes and teachings over the years in a mountainside setting.
At Farm & Wilderness summer camps, the focus is on community, homegrown fun and living closely in the natural world. Three generations of campers have learned a lifelong love of nature and the joy of a simple, participatory life in the Vermont woods.
Over the past two years, a partnership between F&W and the SRMT in the form of a commitment to offer limited financial assistance to Mohawk youth in the form of “camperships” was established.
