National Grid Conducting Service Terminations

Jun 15, 2015

AKWESASNE, NY—The Saint Regis Mohawk Tribal Police Commission and Tribal Police Department are notifying the Akwesasne community that National Grid is conducting terminations of electric service. The utility company’s decision is based on individual customers defaulting on their payment arrangements for past due amounts.

Customers who have unpaid balances on their electrical bills must work with National Grid on an individual basis in order to keep their electricity from being shut off or to get it restored. In July 2013, National Grid provided outreach at Kateri Hall to enable customers to develop payment plans to resolve their individual accounts.

In advance of their work, National Grid has submitted a Private Duty Request to utilize one or more off-duty Tribal Police officers to be present. The Chief of Police and the Police Commission have approved the request to ensure that the safety and well-being of community members and National Grid employees are protected.

Any entity or organization wishing to use the Private Duty service of the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribal Police can contact Chief of Police Matthew Rourke at (518) 358-9200. Requests must be submitted a minimum of one week before the event and will be reviewed by the Chief of Police and the Police Commission prior to a signed agreement.

Community members who have any past due balances are encouraged to contact Stacy Skidders, National Grid Community Liaison at (518)-391-5842. She can provide assistance with setting up payment arrangements to avoid termination of electrical service and to answer questions regarding individual accounts.
