AKWESASNE -- The Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe announces that changes have been made to the Tribe’s proposed amended Land Laws and Laws and Dispute Ordinance (“Amended Ordinance”) following a 30-day community comment period that ended on Kenténha/October 15th. The final version of the Amended Ordinance is now available for community viewing on the Tribal Members Portal, under “Tribal Laws, Ordinances, and Regulations.”
One change was made after the comment period to the definition of “Interested Party” to clarify that someone seeking to become an interested party must have a stake in the outcome of the land dispute. It now reads as follows:
“Interested Party” is any Tribal Member who claims to have an interest in the outcome of the proceeding and who seeks to participate in a land dispute proceeding. “Interested party” does not include a Tribal member without a recognizable interest in resolution of the case. A Tribal Member seeking to participate as an interested party and who has an identifiable and known legal interest in the disputed property shall be treated as an Intervenor and will be bound by the Court’s rulings.
To access the Tribal Members Portal, please visit the Tribe’s website at www.srmt-nsn.gov and click “Tribal Members” in the top right-hand corner. For assistance accessing the portal, please call the SRMT Communications Department at (518) 358-2272.
Along with the Tribal Members Portal, a copy of the Amended Ordinance is available upon request from the Tribal Clerk’s Office, Office of the General Counsel, or the main reception desk at the Ionkwakiohkwaronon Tribal Administration Building.
The Amended Land Laws and Land Dispute Ordinance will be available for viewing until Friday, Tsiothóhrha/December 10th -- prior to the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribal Council signing the Ordinance into tribal law through Tribal Council Resolution.
