Tribal Police Warn Against Possible Blacktop Scam

Jul 26, 2013

Saint Regis Mohawk Tribal Police are asking the community to be aware of possible blacktop scam within Akwesasne. The warning stems from numerous complaints from local residents that an independent road crew is stating they are a paving company. Upon completion of the driveway, this company gives an amount significantly more expensive than the verbal quote.

Director of Compliance of the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe, Elliot Lazore wants the community to be aware of the situation. “Under no circumstances should any community member feel obligated to allow this company to work for them. There is an ongoing investigation as to where this company comes from or originates.”

Paving companies have recently been cited for scam operations throughout the country over the past few years. “The tribe currently does not have a business permit for this type of work,” conclude Lazore.

As a precautionary measure, the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribal Police Department is asking that you contact the station if they approach your residence soliciting business. The brief description of the truck listed it as a white pick-up truck with MASSACHUSETTS tags. The truck has detailing along the side with writing stating “I PAVE ASPHALT SERVICES.” Residents who have spoken with the company report they call themselves “ASPHALT SOLUTIONS.”

If a community member does agree to terms with the company, it is highly recommended they receive a written quote prior to permitting them to begin work.
