South Span Bridge Closure Update - 9:30 a.m.

May 9, 2015

The Seaway International Bridge Cooperation (SIBC) has notified the Joint-Emergency Operation Center for the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne and the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe that maintenance crews have worked through the night on the South Span of the Seaway International Bridge. The bridge remains closed to all traffic. Notifications will be provided as soon as there is a change.

In the meantime, Akwesasne Mohawk Police Services (AMPS) and the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribal Police have increased boat patrols to ensure the ongoing safety of community members travelling by water taxi to and from Kawehno:ke (Cornwall Island). Information on available water taxis can be found on the CKON Facebook page or by contacting the CKON direct lines at 613-575-2100/2101.

Individuals that utilize the water taxis are reminded to be respectful of private property and refrain from leaving vehicles at boat landings. Appreciation is extended once more to community members that are providing the water taxi service.

Vehicular traffic to and from Kawehno:ke across the North Span from the City of Cornwall remains unchanged; however, travelers from the south shore are being redirected to the Ogdensburg/Prescott and the Fort Covington/Dundee Ports of Entry.

Access to Kawehno:ke across the South Span is temporarily suspended for emergency response vehicles as work is taking place. As a result, ambulance units are also being redirected to the Massena Memorial Hospital.

In case of an emergency, please contact the Akwesasne Mohawk Police Services at 613-575-2000 or the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribal Police at 518-358-9200.
