Akwesasne Hosts Academia Avance for Water Protection Talks

AKWESASNE - On Onerahtohkó:wa/May 18, 2017; the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribal Council had the pleasure of concluding Academia Avance's visit to Akwesasne, a Latin college preparatory charter school located in Los Angeles, California. The class traveled to Flint, Michigan; Montreal, Quebec; as well as to the First Nation's communities of Kahnesatake and Kahnawake, to learn about water rights and pollution as they prepare for a presentation at Bennington College in Vermont. They stopped at Akwesasne for two days to meet with the Environment Division's Water Resources Program, Akwesasne Cultural Center, Akwesasne Boys & Girls Club, Akwesasne Freedom School, and Thompson Island Cultural Camp. Tribal Chiefs Ron LaFrance, Eric Thompson and Beverly Cook, along with Sub-Chief Shelley Jacobs welcomed them and wished safe travels as they now make their way to Albany, New York to learn about water contamination at Hoosick Falls.
