Summary: Actively support and uphold the Tribe and Animal Control’s mission and values. Perform a variety of duties involved in the enforcement of Tribal Ordinances and regulations relating to animal control and impounding; responsible for the care and control of animal shelter. 

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following: 

Serve as a representative of the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe, demonstrating a positive attitude and progressive actions through the display of professionalism, courtesy, and appropriate tact and discretion in all interactions with other employees and with the public. 

 

  • Responsible for the care and control of animals housed at the Shelter.
  • Provide assistance to maintain and keep organized files and records.
  • Provide assistance to maintain safety and security of Animal Shelter
  • Provide assistance respond to calls, captures, transports, and impound domestic animals.
  • Issue citations or notices of violation in the enforcement of ordinances relating to animal control.
  • Provide assistance and prepare officer’s reports
  • Conduct investigations of reported violations of code provisions regarding the keeping of animals and cruelty to animals, reports of animal bites, and animal nuisance complaints.
  • Provide assistance Interviews complainant and identifies animals owners
  • Provide assistance to the public regarding animal control matters responds to inquiries and provides information regarding local animal control laws.
  • Depending upon assignment, performs various duties involved in kennel maintenance, cleans kennels, feeds impounded animals, and participates in euthanasia of animals.
  • Perform various office duties including the redemption or purchase of impounded animals, receiving fees, issuing receipts, receives and records reports of lost and found animals.
  • Provide assistance to pick up and transport dead animals to landfill for disposal or to a laboratory for testing in the event of suspected rabies.
  • Be dependable and meet acceptable attendance requirements at all times.
  • Follow all applicable safety rules and regulations.
  • Protect confidential information by preventing unauthorized release, both verbal and/or writing.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned. 

 

Supervisory Responsibilities: There are no supervisor requirements for this position.

Education and/or Experience: 

  • Education: High School diploma or G.E.D.   

 

Knowledge of: 

  • Basic computer skills including basic office and clerical skills.
  • Good public relation skills.
  • Problem solving.
  • Use of  animal capture equipment
  • Be knowledgeable of pertinent local laws, codes and regulations
  • Be familiar with the occupational hazards and safety precautions of working around animals. 

 

Ability to:

  • Apply principles and techniques of prevention, investigation, apprehension, rules of evidence, and all other aspects of Animal Control Ordinance.
  • Skillfully and safely use tribal equipment and vehicles.

Training: National Animal Control Association, Level 1 Certification within one year of employment. 

 

Other Skills and Abilities: Computer testing in the applicable skills may be a requirement during the interview process.

 

Working Conditions: Work is performed under the following conditions: outside where the employee is exposed to varying and extreme weather conditions; non-traditional hours after 4pm or weekends as necessary.

 

Physical Requirements: Physical exertion may be required to climb stairs and over walls, subdue resisting and chase fleeing animals, climb stairs, over walls, constant running, walking, crouching, crawling, kneeling, and twisting; standing or sitting for extended period of time. Must have capability to hear, speak and see to communicate with the general public.  Physical effort is required to lift/carry injured/deceased animals and equipment up to 70lbs.  Great mental ability is required daily.

 

Job Hazard/Risk Factors:  Employees risk physical hazard from domestic animals that are vicious and/or diseased and, therefore, would result in substantial bodily harm or death. Exposure to a variety of noise, bio-hazard communicable diseases hazardous materials, chemicals, bodily fluids, sharp objects, traffic, weapons, drugs and drug paraphernalia; high risk of civil litigation due to performance of duties. 

 

Must have and maintain a valid driver’s license in accordance with the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe’s Fleet Policy.
