The Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe is seeking five (5) tribal members to serve on the Education Committee. The purpose of the Education Committee (“the Committee”) is to serve as an advisory body to the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribal Council (“the Tribal Council”) on matters related to education policy, access, student support, and community priorities. Compensation shall be set by Tribal Council Resolution. The Committee shall:
- Review and assess educational issues affecting the community;
- Engage with educational institutions to advocate for the needs and priorities of Akwesasne students;
- Facilitate community input and consultation on education‑related matters;
- Promote culturally responsive and trauma‑informed educational practices; and
- Provide recommendations to the Tribal Council to support improved educational outcomes.
Members of the Committee shall also be responsible to:
- Attend any required orientation and/or training;
- Participate in regular and special Committee meetings;
- Meet with the Tribal Council and Tribal staff to provide updates regularly, at least once per month;
- Review background materials, reports, and relevant documentation;
- Assess the impacts of educational policies, practices, and proposed initiatives;
- Research, compile, and discuss information relevant to the Committee’s mandate;
- Attend and/or present at community meetings as needed;
- Maintain respect and courtesy toward Committee members, community members, Tribal Council, and Tribal staff;
- Work collaboratively to develop recommendations for Tribal Council consideration;
- Consult with Tribal staff and consider their perspectives and expertise;
- Participate in community engagement sessions to explain educational initiatives, gather feedback, and support transparent communication; and
- Maintain confidentiality of Committee discussions and sensitive information.
ELIGIBILITY OF CANDIDATES
- The Committee shall consist of five (5) voting members.
- The ideal membership composition of the Committee is preferred as follows:
- Two (2) Parents of children currently enrolled in one of the local school districts.
- Two (2) Elders (age 62 or older) from the community.
- One (1) Educational Professional
- Be at least eighteen (18) years of age;
- Be an enrolled member of the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe;
- Pass a criminal background check and drug test;
- Reside within the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe’s jurisdiction (including the 15-mile radius);
- Demonstrate good moral character and a positive reputation within the community; and
- Not be an employee of any Tribal department serving as an advisor to the Committee.
