Summary: The Education Director is responsible for the strategic leadership, operational oversight, and regulatory compliance of all education, including Youth Services, Early Learning Center (Head Start and Child Care), Kanienkeha Language Program, Education, Employment and Training, College and Career Services, and the ARCH program. This position ensures that educational services – from early childhood through adult education – are aligned with tribal values, community needs, and that all programs meet federal, state, and tribal standards. The Director is responsible for ensuring compliance with the 102-477 Plan, OCFS regulations, and the HHS Office of Head Start Program Performance Standards. Additionally, the Director must lead strategic initiatives that support the ongoing improvement and growth of the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe's Education Division.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following:
- Provide visionary leadership and supervision to program managers and staff across the entire Education division
- Foster a collaborative, culturally responsive, and trauma-informed work environment.
- Serve as a mandated reporter and ensure all staff are trained in child protection protocols
- Ensure programs align with tribal priorities and community needs, as well as oversee the planning, implementation, and evaluation of the division
- Ensure full compliance with applicable regulations, including: OCFS Child Care Regulations (Parts 404–418 of NYCRR), Head Start Program Performance Standards, and the Head Start Act of 2007, Public Law 102-477 integration requirements.
- Maintain accurate documentation and reporting in accordance with Tribal, federal, and state guidelines.
- Establish measurable goals and outcomes for each program area; conduct regular evaluations and use data to drive continuous improvement.
- Ensure all programs develop and maintain comprehensive policies and procedures.
- Collaborate with Tribal leadership and community stakeholders to assess needs and develop responsive programming.
- Maintain strong relationships with families, schools, and community partners.
- Direct and conduct studies and research; prepare reports and publications related to educational trends, program objectives, and accomplishments.
- Consult with staff and external agencies to address issues, coordinate activities, and resolve challenges impacting the Tribe’s educational goals.
- Identify and pursue funding opportunities to support strategic educational goals and objectives.
- Lead the development of the Division’s financial planning and annual budget submission; present budget requests to the SRMT Budget Team.
- Provide progress reports to the Executive Director and Tribal Council as requested.
- Provide Community meetings and provide updates when required.
- Develop partnerships with educational organizations that support the Division’s objectives.
- Maintain collaborative relationships with the Superintendents of Salmon River and Massena Central School Districts to monitor student progress, achievement, and concerns.
- Develop a strategic plan to ensure Mohawk representation on local school boards and promote voter participation in school board elections annually.
- Publicize and promote activities and initiatives within the Education Division.
- Represent the Education Division’s perspectives to agencies, other governments, school boards, and the general public.
- Promote professional development and capacity-building among educators and administrators; support staff in aligning their work with the Tribe’s overall educational mission.
- Conduct official correspondence on behalf of SRMT related to Education Division matters.
- Exhibit a friendly and courteous demeanor when engaging with community members, colleagues, and the public.

- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Mandated Reporter: This position is a mandated reporter. Mandated report training must be conducted upon hire, and annual training must be achieved. This includes completing any necessary training and adhering to all reporting obligations as defined by applicable laws and tribal policies. The director shall ensure all staff within the education division are trained and understand their responsibilities as mandated reporters.
Supervisory Responsibilities: Supervises one Assistant Director, the Education Division Administrative Office, and Program Managers within the Education Division – Education, Employment and Training, College and Career Services, Early Learning Center (Head Start and Child Care), Kanienkeha Language Program, and ARCH Program. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the St Regis Mohawk Tribe's policies, procedures, and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; developing and editing Job Descriptions; rewarding and disciplining employees; and addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Education and/or Experience: Must possess a Bachelor’s degree in Education, Administration, or related field and have a minimum of 5 years of experience in education leadership or executive leadership.
Preferred: Master’s degree in Education, Administration or related field, knowledge of federal and state child care and education regulations. 3 years’ experience with grant management and/or program integration under the 102-477 Plan and 3 years’ experience in teaching or managing youth services.
