SUMMARY: Under the general direction of the ELC Program Manager, the Head Start Supervisor will have the responsibility for the daily oversight of the Head Start staff, assurance of compliance to applicable regulations to maintain a high-quality program and learning environment. The Head Start Supervisor will evaluate the classroom environment and teaching staff through regular observation.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:

 

  • Ensure that all children feel safe and are safe in the program setting at all times
  • Ensure all Teachers, Teacher Aides, substitutes and other Head Start staff understand and acknowledge OCFS Mandated Reporter/Hotline responsibilities and understand and acknowledge the SRMT ELC Mandated Reporter Policy
  • Adhere to all licensor and funding agency policies, regulations and standards from SRMT, NYS Office of Child and Family Services (OCFS) and federal Office of Head Start (OHS).
  • Engage with parents as needed to hear concerns and issues; take appropriate action based on review of expressed concerns
  • Monitor, track and communicate with staff to support performance goals, annual trainings, work plans, attendance/schedules, certifications and timecards.
  • Provide skill development, coaching and mentoring to Head Start Teachers and other reporting staff
  • Participate in required trainings and in-service training sessions. Plan, implement, and evaluate with Program Manager and Education & Disabilities Coordinator ongoing professional development programs for Head Start staff
  • Arrange and facilitate regular meetings with Head Start staff; ensure strong team communications and professional work environment
  • Work with all stakeholders – Staff and family - in the development, implementation, and coordination of internal support plans (action plans, behavior plans) for students
  • Ensure monthly reports are completed in a timely manner. Ensure regular communication through verbal and/or written reports to other administrative staff and Program Manager on the activities and status of the Head Start program
  • Assist in the identification, purchase, and annual inventory of Head Start supplies and equipment according to applicable policies and procedures
  • Assist in maintaining a safe working environment in the ELC
  • Promote a positive image of the ELC and foster a climate of respect and integrity
  • Exhibit a friendly and courteous demeanor when interacting with colleagues and families
  • Perform other related duties as assigned

     

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:  Carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable Tribal rules. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training Head Start Teachers, Teacher Assistants, Teacher Aides, Substitutes, Family Service Coordinator, Family Advocate and Transportation Coordinator. Plan, assign, and direct work; appraise performance; reward and discipline staff as necessary.

 

  • Must be a Mandated Reporter or obtain Mandated Reporter certification within one (1) month of hire, and maintain certification throughout employment.
  • Knowledge of Head Start and Child Care program is preferred.
  • Knowledge of Mohawk language and traditions is preferred.

 

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

  • An Associate’s Degree in Early Childhood Education or related field WITH a plan of study leading to a Bachelors’ degree 

OR

  • A New York State Program Administration credential and full-time teaching experience in a child day care center, family or group family day care home or other early childhood program and experience supervising staff in a child care program or related field of work.

PREFERRED

  • NYS Certified Teacher
  • Bachelor’s Degree

  • Ability to consume, process and retain professional development trainings and other information.
  • Ability to engage staff in cooperative problem solving, planning, and continuing evaluation of themselves and the program.
